GIRDA MEDICAL DISPENSARY

Girda is a mountain village approximately ninety kilometer's from Alba Iulia town. The region although very beautiful with dramatic scenery can be extremely hostile in the winter months. In fact the region can be covered with snow for anything up to nine months a year.
When we first came to Girda we found a Medical dispensary in the loosest sense of the word. The building, as we so often find, was in a poor state and had not received any maintenance or equipment for many years. Upon inspection we found an erratic water supply that would be frozen for the majority of the year and of extremely low pressure when it actually flowed. This supplied a toilet that couldn't flush and a dangerous shower set up.
The electric's were deadly with spirals of bare wire snaking across stone blocks to generate heat for the freezing dispensary.
The Doctor, Christian, had tried his best to maintain and repair the building having virtually no materials or funding.

We began our work with a new electric installation to British Standard levels running from a new safety consumer unit. Over sink water heaters were added above newly installed sinks and trickle heaters were used to try and prevent freezing. All piping and plumbing was lagged and insulated and we installed a new, safe electric shower and a water heater over the bath.
Two wooden floors were ripped up and replaced to the same high standard as at Ighiu Dispensary with treated timber and linoleum. We have also provided some equipment and we shall continue to do so, as this is an ongoing project.

October 2002

Mario upgraded the antiquated and dangerous wiring at the dispensary also fitting new lights and running electricity to new rooms.

A new law recently passed in Romania meant that the Doctor's surgery was too small! Jeremy built an archway to join two adjacent rooms.

From start to finish - The Romanians had some painting to do!
