INITIAL VISIT IN OCTOBER 2002 The objective within the first visit is to contact and meet with individuals from A&E at Alba and Campeni, at the local ambulance stations, the orphanages, the Soup Kitchen, the local schools, the Medical Dispensary and the Welfare Centre to gain trust, knowledge and insight to the level of care available. This will provide the opportunity to determine the level of care and how we can assist in improving the care given to the wide spectrum of the community, whether in the hospital environment or in their local area. The second planned trip in March 2003 will hopefully be a productive one in which we can begin to teach staff and promote health and community awareness where relevant, and also to outline areas in which we can be of assistance in future visits (i.e. Major Incident Planning, setting up a Call Centre and prioritising calls to the Ambulance Service etc).
Christine White is a State Registered Paramedic currently employed by Sussex Ambulance Service NHS Trust (SAST) based at Chichester in West Sussex. She has been working with the SAST since 1996. She was involved in a similar project in The Gambia in 2000, and has learned greatly from that experience. She was approached by the SROA in May 2002 and has been moved by the dedication of all involved with the charity, she decided to take unpaid leave from work to assist with this amazing and genuinely worthwhile project.
